Power dressing is your secret workwear weapon.
Dressing powerfully is not about trying to change how others think of you, but about setting yourself up to be the most serious, professional and brilliant woman you can be.
Your working wardrobe can be your daily armour, but it can also be an excuse for expanding and experimenting with style. After all, these are the clothes you spend 70% of your time in. Here are our five power dressing rules that’ll make you walk tall.
1. Make a statement with suiting
There is something inexplicably powerful about a woman wearing a finely cut suit. If you think a suit is too much of a corporate choice, think again. Whether is bright, patterned or floral – you can still look the business with simple and sleek accessories.
2. Pick out your prints
Whether you’re a minimalist or more forward in your prints, both have a place in power dressing. This season, gingham, stripes and florals are dominating the collections. You might think, florals don’t really exude assertiveness and authority? Think again, florals in rich hues and moody, dark colours have a place on powerful women
3. Invest in a good quality blazer
The blazer helps to define and finish off any outfit. It can transform a feminine dress into boardroom style, a pair of jeans into an office appropriate outfit, or a tailored pair of pants into a sharp suit.
4. Create your signature look
A smart power-move to create your personal signature with one colour, accessory or style. Jenna Lyons is known well for her glasses, Yasmin Sewell is known well for her blazers and exaggerated shapes. Take inspiration from them, and put your wardrobe and accessories to work. Power dressing isn’t about blending in, it’s about standing out from the crowd.
5. Keep it simple in a power dress
A dress can be the easiest piece to pull out of our wardrobe. But, the right dress can be office arsenal. When searching for the right dress for you, look for wrap dresses, shift dresses, and of course, a little black dress.
